Preparation of spherical titanium powder by radio frequency plasma

Sheng Yanwei et al. used irregularly shaped large-particle TiH2 powder as raw material, and used radio frequency plasma spheroidization to prepare fine spherical Ti powder. The powder morphology, phase and particle size were tested by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and laser particle size analysis. The results show that the dehydrogenation decomposition, blasting and spheroidization of large particles of TiH2 powder are completed in one step in plasma, and fine spherical powders are obtained. The phase composition is mainly Ti and residual TiH phase; the spherical powder is dehydrogenated at 750℃ for 2h under the vacuum condition of 1.3×10-4 Pa to obtain single-phase spherical Ti powder. The average particle size of the particles is reduced from the original 100~150μm to 20~50μm, and the spheroidization rate can reach 100%. As the feed rate increased, the spheroidization of the powder decreased. Treating TiH2 powder by radio frequency plasma is a new method for preparing fine spherical titanium powder.
